Arrangements ready for Gilgit-Baltistan polling


GILGIT: The Election Commission has completed the arrangements for maiden elections of Gilgit-Baltistan legislative council. The voting for 23 seats will be held tomorrow whereas election on constituency LA 19-Ghazar 1 has been postponed after death of MQM candidate.

There are 7, 17,286 registered voters in six districts Gilgit, Skardu, Diamer, Ghanchay, Ghazar and Astur of Gilgit-Baltistan. The number of male voters is 3, 84,909 and female voters is 3, 32,377.

The 99 candidates of ten political parties are taking part in the elections among which 23 belonged to PPP, 18 MQM, 15 PML-N, 14 PML-Q, 4 ANP, 3 JUI-F, 2 Tahreek-e-Insaaf, 1 candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami and 6 candidates of Gilgit-Baltistan Democratic Alliance. The number of independent candidates is 165.

Three women are contesting polls on general seats. The two women belonged to PML-Q whereas one is independent candidate. One thousand and twenty-two polling stations, 258 for men and 253 for women have been established in six districts. Among these, 153 declared 153 sensitive and 119 declared most sensitive.

Election Commissioner Gilgit-Baltistan Rahim Nawaz Khan Durrani and AIG Police Hajat Mir said election and security arrangements have been completed.
