Jerusalem

Jerusalem March 16 (Xinhua) – Clashes erupted between Israeli police and Arab demonstrators on Tuesday in a disputed part of Jerusalem, and further heightened tensions that have already threatened to strangle the United States in its infancy peacemaking efforts.

During the violence that began in the early morning, hundreds of Arab youths threw stones at Israeli police and set tires and garbage bins on fire in several locations in East Jerusalem, and a section dominated by Arabs from the Holy City of the Palestinian claim to be the capital of a future state and the latter responded with stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

As of noon today, and wounded about 50 demonstrators and detained more than 30, and a number of Israeli police officers were also wounded, according to a rough count by the local media. Israeli authorities have also reportedly stepped up security around the Arab towns in northern Israel and blocked in the local Arab bus from Jerusalem, in an attempt to forestall any escalation in the city of Fallujah.

At the same time, a general closure on the Israeli army on the West Bank since last Friday is still in force, and angry Palestinians on Tuesday and continued to clash with Israeli security forces at checkpoints between Israel and the Palestinian territories, which led to a number of casualties.

The fighting came after weeks of rising tensions since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the last month and included two of the holy places in the West Bank to the list of Israeli heritage, prompting Palestinian accusations that the Jewish state is trying to tighten its grip on the occupied Palestinian and put facts on the ground to prevent Palestinians the establishment of a viable state.

Adding oil to the flame, and the Israeli Interior Ministry last week greenlighted a project to build 1,600 new housing units in the new Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem, a day after U.S. envoy George Mitchell officially announced that Israel and the Palestinians agreed to start direct talks under the mediation of the United States . In a step irritating the Palestinian leadership is already doubtful, who has vowed not to enter the barley brokered by the United States and Israel to cancel the project.

The latest developments that ignited the anger of the Palestinians, Israel on Monday opened to restore a historic synagogue in the Jewish Quarter in the Old City in East Jerusalem, not far from the complex hills controversial that prides itself on not only in the most sacred place of prayer for the Jews, and the Western Wall, on its western side , but also the third holiest site in Islam, Al-Aqsa Mosque, within the enclosure. This step raised the allegations that Jewish extremists were planning to destroy the complex and build a Jewish temple on the site, which Jews believe is the site of two temples destroyed in the Bible.

In the face of what they described as an Israeli attempt to “Judaize” the holy city, and the Palestinian factions and chanting the call to take action to defend Al-Aqsa Mosque. In the Gaza Strip, thousands took to the streets chanting slogans against Israel and in honor of the Samarra mosque, also called the rulers of Islamic (Hamas) for a “day of rage” against the Israeli moves. In the West Bank, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which is dominated by Fatah, and warned that Israel is dragging the whole world into a religious war.

In the confrontation cast a new layer of shade on Israel and the Palestinian peace process, which already was overshadowed by the recent Israeli expansion plan in East Jerusalem. Despite U.S. pressure, Netanyahu administration so far suggests that it would not meet the intention of the Palestinian request, the cancellation of the project, which made enemies of the Middle East to a standstill just as the new United States mediation efforts, which were about to bear fruit.

In East Jerusalem, the plan also has struck Israel and the United States relations to crisis and clear, with the Israeli ambassador in Washington are talking about 35 years. Recent days have seen U.S. officials lined up to condemn the expansion project, which they described as “an insult to the United States as it was in when U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was in the area of peace-making efforts.

Against this background, Mitchell postponed his visit to the region, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday. Reported / / Jerusalem Post / quoting the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv as saying that this change was due to “logistical reasons” and that he will arrive some time after the meeting of the Quartet of the United States and the United Nations, the European Union and Russia in Moscow on Thursday. After speculation that circulated envoy to postpone his trip, because Washington is waiting for the official Israeli response to the East Jerusalem housing plan.

City Faces 35% Cut After Pipe Bursts,Water-starve

MUMBAI INDIA: In what appears to be one of the worst pipeline bursts this year, a six-foot-diameter pipe burst in Bhiwandi on Monday evening. So great is the damage that the entire city will have to do with around 35% less water supply for the next couple of days—something unprecedented in recent history.

“It will take at least two days for the pipe to be repaired. We tried to arrest the water gushing out but it took time because the damage was huge,’’ said deputy municipal commissioner Dineshchandra Gondalia. “We cannot say with certainty how long the repair work will take but we are trying to speed it up as much as possible.’’

The incident occurred at Valgaon near Gundavli on a pipeline carrying water from Tansa to the Bhandup Water Complex around 7 pm. Officials said the age of the century-old pipeline could be the major reason for the burst although the immediate trigger was not known.

At the time of going to press, civic officials were still examining the extent of the damage. Local farmers are worried that the huge flow of water into their fields will damage the standing crops. The repair work is likely to begin in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The Tansa (East) main supplies water to all the major reservoirs of the city from the Bhandup Water Complex. Officials said that almost all parts of Mumbai would face a water shortage till the repairs were complete.

At present, the water content in the lakes supplying the city is 4.57 million litres as opposed to 6 million litres last year.

Frequent pipe bursts in recent times have added to the woes of Mumbai, which is already reeling under a 15% water cut. A recent Right To Information (RTI) query revealed that there were as many as 1,031 cases of pipe bursts or leaks in 2009, draining the city of millions of litres of water.

In fact, the BMC reported about three cases of burst or leaking pipes every day in 2009. The biggest burst last year was in May, when a pipe at Lalbaug ruptured while the flyover there was being constructed. This year, there was a major pipeline burst at Nana Chowk in Grant Road.

According to a hydraulic official, the 3-km stretch between Gundavli and Tarai—where the pipeline splintered open—will have to be isolated. “Once we isolate the stretch, we will have to drain out all the water,’’ he said. “After the patch dries up, we will be able to weld it. The quantity of water lost has not yet been estimated.’’

2010 March Madness Bracket

The 2010 March Madness bracket is interesting, to say the least. In the 2010 March Madness bracket, there’s going to be a lot of tough games to
pick, and many big potential matchups. Although the bubble was the big debate heading into Selection Sunday, the bigger debate down the line will be more important. Which team has the easiest road to Indianapolis, who has the hardest road, and who is best equipped to win it all? Every possibility of the 2010 March Madness bracket will be crunched until Thursday, and there are already big possibilities.

In the Midwest bracket, Kansas is the number one overall seed, and would therefore likely have the easiest road. However, there’s a lot of star power in this bracket, and several teams capable of making a run – if they’re hot. Ohio State has become a hot No. 2 seed behind Evan Turner, while Georgetown exploded to claim the third seed. Meanwhile, Maryland and Michigan State could form a big 4-5 second round matchup.

The Jayhawks didn’t get big favors in their 2010 March Madness bracket, as they would face a dangerous second round team in either UNLV or Northern Iowa. Tennessee, who beat Kansas before, is also there as a sixth seed, although they get San Diego State first. However, Kansas has been the most consistent team of the year, while the others in the Midwest can get very hot, or very cold.

On the other side of the 2010 March Madness bracket, Syracuse slid down to the last No. 1 seed. They now must go to the West, and to Salt Lake City in the Sweet 16. Kansas State looks to reach their first Final Four decades as a No. 2, but the Orange could get No. 3 seed and Big East rival Pitt in the Elite Eight. But first, Syracuse could face eighth seed Gonzaga in the second round, and Vanderbilt or Butler in the Sweet 16.

At least two teams in this region got in by controversial means, as Florida and Minnesota were among the last teams in the 2010 March Madness bracket. Florida got the 10?th seed against BYU, and Minnesota gets to challenge sixth seeded Xavier. The Musketeers could get Pitt in the second round, in a rematch of the Sweet 16 last year.
