GILGIT: The winning candidates and their supporters are celebrating after Gilgit-Baltistan legislative elections while the workers of losers are protesting the results.

Deputy Commissioner Gilgit Asad Zamin has said that the situation is completely under control.

The unofficial results of 21 slots have come out after Thursday’s elections in Gilgit-Baltistan.

A large crowd of workers have assembled at the offices of the political parties and houses of the winning candidates in six districts – Ghazar, Astore, Ganche, Diamir, Gilgit and Skardu. Sweets are being distributed amidst celebrations there.

On the other hand, protests are being staged by the workers of losing candidates on the alleged rigging in the polls.

Workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Q and an independent candidate staged a protest and a sit-in in Danyor area of Gilgit.

Police baton charged protesters at the office of a returning officer in Goharabad, Diamir 1 GB-15.

PESHAWAR: Two judges of Peshawar High Court (PHC) who took oath under Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) during former president Musharraf era, have resigned from their offices on Monday morning, Geo news reported.

According to source, two judges have also tendered their resignation with registrar Peshawar High Court.

It may be mentioned all high courts in country and Supreme Court itself, have served contempt of court notices on PCO judges while some among them have asked for pardon from their respective courts, however, others decided to resign in protest against courts’ action.

A group claiming to have links with the Taliban in Pakistan has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s (May 28) bombing in Lahore that killed at least 35 people. The bomb exploded between the offices of Pakistan’s intelligence agency and a police station, raising fears that armed conflict between the military and Taliban fighters in the Swat Valley was spreading to the country’s cities.

TEHRAN: Iran’’s foreign ministry said on Monday that a planned summit to be hosted by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with his Afghanistan and Pakistan counterparts has been postponed.

The summit, scheduled for Tuesday, was put off due to the busy programme of President Asif Ali Zardari, foreign ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi told reporters.

He did not give any new date for the summit, but said it will be fixed after “co ordination” with the offices of the two other presidents.

The Tuesday meeting had been expected to discuss the rebuilding of war-shattered Afghanistan.

The three leaders met less than three months ago in the Iranian capital Tehran for a regional economic summit, along with leaders of other neighbouring states.

That summit pledged to help rebuild Afghanistan, and also the Gaza Strip after Israel’’s devastating offensive at the turn of the year.

Iran’’s efforts to help rebuild Afghanistan come amid recent overtures by US President Barack Obama’’s administration towards Tehran.
